I love it when my granite countertops are all shiny and sparkly, but I am way too frugal to pay for the expensive granite cleaners. So, what is a girl to do?

She finds her own DIY granite cleaner, of course.  I came across this recipe a couple of years ago and have been using it ever since.

This DIY granite cleaner is so easy to make and I promise your granite will sparkle and shine like the day it was installed.

Don't forget to check out a list of my other homemade cleaners that can save you money!

DIY Granite Cleaner

Why This Works

This works great for cleaning granite for a few reasons.

  • Rubbing Alcohol kills off germs and bacteria that are on the countertop.
  • Dish Soap helps break up any greasy surfaces and food left behind.
  • Essential oils also act as a degreaser and make the kitchen smell great!

Homemade Granite Cleaner

This natural granite cleaner only takes a few ingredients and minutes to make. Make up a bottle today.

Items you need:

  • rubbing alcohol (I recommend 70% isopropyl alcohol)
  • water- just plain tap water works fine
  • dish soap (I love Dawn brand dish soap)
  • essential oils (to make it smell great!)
  • Spray Bottle

You will need alcohol, water, and dish soap. I like to use essential oils to make the DIY granite cleaner smell fantastic, too.

Step 1: Measure out two cups of water and pour into a spray bottle.

Step 2: Add 1/4 cup isopropyl alcohol to the spray bottle.

Step 3: Then add about 5-6 drops of dish soap to the spray bottle. You want to add enough to break up the grease, but not so much that it becomes soapy.

Note: I always use the blue Dawn dish soap. I feel like it works better than other brands.

Step 4: Finally, I like adding 10-15 drops of essential oils.

Note: essential oils will help take away from the alcohol smell and help with disinfecting and degreasing.

I love the smell of the sweet orange for a spray. I am not brand picky with essential oils, but I do love Fabulous Frannie essential oils. I have noticed that they are just as good as the more expensive brands but cost much less.

You can head over here to grab one of their gift sets or just buy one bottle. They are usually less than $5 a bottle.

Using The DIY Granite Spray

To use granite spray just give it a little shake before each use. Spray the DIY granite cleaner directly on the countertop and use a microfiber cloth to wipe the counter off. It leaves such a great shine!

How Often Can I Use This?

You can use the granite spray daily! I usually clean my granite after breakfast & dinner. For lunch, we just quickly reheat food and don't really make a mess on the counters.

Does This Disinfect?

Absolutely! This is a great cleaner to spray down after cutting up chicken or making hamburger patties on the countertop.

The granite cleaner has a high enough percentage of alcohol that it can kill off salmonella and other germs on your countertops.

Note: To disinfect I recommend spraying the countertops and then letting them sit for a few minutes before wiping them down.

I love making my own household cleaners. Not only are they frugal, but I know I am using more natural cleaners that are safer for my family.

I am wanting to get into the "world of green cleaning", but know absolutely nothing about it. Can this also be used to wipe down wood cabinets?

Hi Candace, I would not recommend using the granite cleaner on wood. You can make your own dusting spray easily, too. The link below is to my favorite dusting spray recipe. You can also subscribe to my newsletter to get a free homemade cleaner recipe ebook. I hope that helps.

I have always bought the expensive granite top cleaners but I ran out this morning. I thought I would try a homemade one for today. But I LOVE THIS ONE SO MUCH MORE!!! With my expensive one I have to go back over it with a dry cloth to prevent streaking. With yours, I don't. One wipe is all that is required for beautiful, clean counter tops!! Thank you so much!!!!

I have also been using this recipe for several years and a neat little trick that I learned is to put your essential oils into the alcohol in a glass measuring dish and give a quick stir and let those two sit for 5 minutes. By doing so, your essential oils will not rise to the top in your spray bottle. Obviously still give your bottle a swirl before using.

I will give this a try. Thanks!

Could you use paper towels or cotton washcloth or is it better to use the microfiber clothes? I assume you would have to wash the clothes after each use?

    • Julie says

      June 22, 2016 at 11:35 am

Of course! I use microfiber cloths to save money, but you can use paper towels if you prefer them.

Hi I don't want to use alcohol is there any substitute for alcohol

    • Julie says

Alcohol is what helps disinfect and leave a shine. I am not sure what else you could use to do that and works well with granite. Sorry.

When you say alcohol do you mean rubbing alcohol?

    • Julie says

      February 17, 2016 at 8:25 pm

Yes, sorry about that. I just use regular rubbing alcohol from the store.

I was made aware that citrus is bad for granite, hence discarded my citrus Lysol wipes and am looking for alternatives. Thoughts?

    • Julie says

      February 05, 2016 at 10:20 am

Great question! Lemon juice is bad for granite because of the high amount of acid in the juice. However, lemon essential oil isn't made from the juice of a lemon. It is made from the rind of the lemon and is pH neutral and doesn't contain the citric acid. Therefor it doesn't cause problems to the granite like a lemon juice would. I hope that helps.

I haven't tried it before on glass. I will have to give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion!

Oh, I love these DIY cleaner recipes! Our place has total fake granite counter tops, but maybe someday in the future we'll need this one. Right now most of mine consist largely of vinegar and baking soda.
