Inside: Get rid of funky smells with this easy-to-make homemade carpet deodorizer. It takes less than 5 minutes to make and your home will smell so good even after you vacuum. Get a fresh-smelling home with this DIY carpet freshener.

I have two dogs and as much as I love them they make my house smell, well, like dogs. It's not too bad in spring or fall when the windows are opened every once in a while.

However, about the middle of winter, the house just gets that doggy smell. I used to buy the Glade Carpet Powder and it worked great to help with the smells, however, I noticed it was getting to be $2 a bottle or more.

Beyond that, they are full of chemicals that I am not so comfortable using in my carpet. So I decided to make my own homemade carpet deodorizer. It is really easy to make (5 minutes or less!) and doesn't cost much money.

If you want your home smelling fresh without using a bunch of chemicals check out this easy-to-make homemade carpet deodorizer. It smells great and is so simple to make.

To make this carpet freshener you will need a few things.

    • baking soda
    • essential oil
    • jar to store the deodorizer in

You will want to start with a canning jar and some baking soda. Put a cup of baking soda in the canning jar.

Then drop in about 4-5 drops of essential oils, I love this Serenity Oil from Amazon.

But, you can use whatever scent you like. You could put in some cinnamon smell around the holidays to make it smell more festive.

Then, put the lid on the canning jar and give it a couple of good shakes.

From here you can do a couple of things to disperse the homemade carpet powder.

You can use a nail to poke 4 or 5 holes in the lid or if you want to be fancy you can get these fantastic shaker lids by Ball.

I started with the nail poke lids but since I love this homemade carpet deodorizer so much I finally switched to the nicer lids.

You can now shake the carpet deodorizer all over the carpet. I like to sprinkle it on pretty thick.

Once you shake it on the carpet let it sit for 15-30 minutes. While it is sitting the homemade carpet deodorizer makes the room smell fantastic!
