what to buy when shopping at the dollar store

I love those dollar stores, you know where everything is $1? It is amazing to me that a whole store can be filled with things that are all under one dollar.

Although some of the items at the dollar store aren't a great deal there are still plenty of deals to grab at the dollar tree.

What To Buy At The Dollar Store To Save Money

Plus, if you go to Dollar Tree you can use coupons too! However, not everything at the dollar stores is a good deal. Crayons, for instance, seem cheap compared to Crayola. So I put together a list of some of my favorite deals at the dollar stores.

gift bags from the dollar store

Bags

I love the bags from the dollar stores. I think they are the same quality that you pick up from Meijer or Walmart. The bags at Meijer are often $2-$3 so getting the same quality for a third of the price is a great deal.

cleaners from the dollar store

Cleaning Supplies

Dollar Tree sells Palmolive and The Works, both cleaning supplies that we often see coupons for. Any time I can get cleaning supplies for under $.50 I am happy.

I have also heard really good things about LA's Totally Awesome Cleaner that the Dollar Tree sells.

books at the dollar tree

Books

They usually have a great selection of books. For kids, you can often find Disney-themed coloring or activity books. I used to buy educational activity books for my son when he was little.

They also have a nice selection of adult books. Some of them might be hit or miss, but I can usually find one or two books I find interesting. I like to pick one up if we are going on vacation. I would much rather take a $1 book to the beach than risk tearing up a library book.

Toiletries

I love all the name-brand toiletries I can find at the Dollar Tree. With coupons, I can often get items for free or cheap. However, I don't buy any non-name brand products. I just haven't been really happy with the generic.

Storage Items

You can get some great foil baking products that are great for freezing meals. They also have Hefty brand zip bags that we almost always have coupons for. I have also had good luck with the small storage bins to put medicines and first aid supplies in. They work great.

cereal from the dollar store

Food

The dollar stores often sell food for of course $1. They often have Jennie-O Bacon, Armour Pepperoni, Bisquick, even name-brand cereals.

Combine this will a coupon and you can pick up a great deal on foods. Some of their foods like the Libby fruits & vegetables sell for under $1.

Don't have a dollar store nearby? You can shop at Dollar Tree and have things shipped to your house. Everything is still $1 of course! It's awesome! Just head over here and get started shopping!!

If you haven't been to the dollar stores in a while you should check them out.

I am often surprised at how many great name-brand deals my dollar store has. What are your favorite things to buy from the dollar stores?

I am a senior, and my apartment building is literally 100 feet from a $tree and there is a 99Cents store across the street. I am in the $tree every day ! There is so much I love that I could go one forever, but ONE thing I always buy is the 6 pack of COLD water. If you buy up front, then one bottle is a dollar ! I live in the desert and we live on cold water !! I also buy the box of 24 tension headache tablets, works as well as Excedrin! The purse size Kleenex are $3 at Walgreens, and my dog loves the canned Mandarin oranges. One more thing, they sell Gessner whole and 2% milk in cartons that don't have to be refrigerated until they are opened. You CAN'T tell tell difference from the grocery store and great to have on hand so you don't have to run out in the middle of a meal !

As a former teacher I was blessed when I discovered the Dollar Tree store. I never spent just a dollar but I did spend $hundreds and it was worth it. As teachers we love to see the joy on the faces of the students when Christmas gifts are going home with them .

I usually get them from the newspaper or print them online. Money Saving Mom always does a weekly matchup of the Dollar Tree coupon matchups and you can print the printable coupons from her website.

I buy my cleaning cloths, microfiber, swifter pads, propose and alcohol. Bandaids, craft supplies, candy, ( thought they are smaller bags) school supplies ( though pencils are not so nice) rubber ball toys, sometimes science kits and art kits. Hand sanitizer, hair bands. ( the expense ones busy anyway. ) sunglasses, they have cloth tote. Bags i use these for gifts instead of the paper ones.

I buy party & crafts supplies from Dollar Tree whenever possible! I make party favors & decorations, including centerpieces & the items they sell are always cute. Also, organizer bins/baskets/containers! And my dog's poop bags... 6-8 rolls in one package for $1 is awesome compared to spending $3-$6 for less bags in a package anywhere else.

I didn't know that they had poop bags. We go through so much when we are hiking with our dogs. I will have to pick up a bunch next time I am there. Thanks for the tip!

Gift wrap, tissue paper, gift bags, thank you cards and lots of party supplies. Where can you get 2 scotch tape dispensers for $1?? You save so much money at the dollar store buying these items.

I love the greeting card deals... most are nice enough, and they'll only cost you 50 cents or a buck! I just spent $8 on a Mother's Day card at Target, which is pretty absurd (although it IS for my mom). I also gravitate toward the candy aisle; the calories are the same, but at least I'm spending less!

The candy aisle is great! My husband is addicted to Certs and they are half the price that we pay at the grocery store.
