save money on household bills

Are you trying to reduce your household expenses? I completely understand. Just about the time our gas bill starts dropping in the spring the electric bill starts rising. It often feels like a never-ending cycle.

If you are trying to watch your spending, reducing your utility bills can be an easy way to keep some extra money in the bank each month. With these easy ways to save money on household bills, you can save money each month without a lot of sacrificing.

Save Money On Electric Bills

Since most of the electric bill is from heating or cooling your home you can really make a difference in your bill by turning up the air a couple of degrees or turning down the heat. It doesn't have to be a drastic temperature change either.

Another great way to save is by using a programmable thermostat. You can adjust it to a lower temperature during the night while you are sleeping and save some extra money. You can pick them up for under $20 so it won't take long for them to pay for themselves.

Your water heater can also be a big suck on the electric bill. You can either turn down the temperature to save a little money or another easy way to save is by using a blanket for your water heater. You can pick up an insulating blanket for around $20 at the hardware stores or Amazon. It's easy to put on your water heater and will save you money.

One of my favorite ways to save money on household bills is by making sure the appliances are clean. You can save around $5 to $10 dollars a month by keeping your refrigerator coils cleaned and vacuumed. It's simple and it saves you money. Check out my step by step directions on cleaning the fridge coils.

You don't have to deal with freezing temperatures or a humid house in summer to save on your electric bills. With these easy tips, you can save all year long and still be comfortable.

Save Money On Water Bills

Saving money on water bills can sound tricky. After all, you aren't going to skip showering for days just to save a little money on your water bill. However, there are a few things you can do to save money.

My favorite trick is to wait and run a full load of either dishes or laundry. The dishwasher is going to use the same amount of water with a half load or full so you might as well fill it up all the way. The washing machine might as well run with a large full load in it instead of smaller loads. Plus, this way you are spending less time on laundry.

Another easy way to save money on water bills is to add a low flow shower head to your bathroom shower. You can pick them up for pretty cheap on Amazon and it will save you money every time you use it. It's a quick and easy change you can make to help reduce the amount of water you use.

With these simple tips, you can save money and conserve water. It's an easy win-win!

Save Money On Gas Bills

Gas bills are very similar to the electric bills. You can really make a difference in your gas bill by adjusting your thermostat by a degree or two. Save money by using a programmable thermostat. You can adjust it to a lower temperature during the day while you are gone, or at night to save some extra money.

If your dryer is gas you can save money by making sure you regularly clean the dryer vent. Your dryer vent tends to get clogged with lint over time and it can increase drying times and even cause house fires! Save time drying your clothes and money with your gas bill by cleaning the dryer vent. If you have never done this before you can see my step by step directions on how to clean the dryer vent like a pro.

Just by making a few changes around the house you can save money on your gas bills.

Save Money On Phone Bills

Saving money on your phone bills can be easy with a few tips. One, if you only use your cell phone most of the time consider ditching your landline. The average landline bill is about $25 a month so by ditching the landline you could easily save over $200 a year.

If you aren't willing to get rid of the house phone then you can always check your bill and get rid of anything you don't use. We saved a few dollars every month by getting rid of caller id. Make sure you aren't paying for long distance services too.

Save Money On Internet & Cable

If you are tired of high internet and cable bills there are a few tips to lower them. One, you can call and ask for a lower rate. I have had great luck with this. Usually, when I want to do this I get the price of a competitor that is lower and then ask them to meet or beat the price. I am always surprised at how willing they are to do this.

Another easy way to save on Internet is to stop renting your modem or router. We used to rent ours but realized we could buy a new one every 9-10 months for the price that we were renting one. Check your bill to see how much you are paying and then price out buying one outright. You may just save some money.

Finally, if you are ready to really save some money on your cable bill ditch it. We ditched cable years ago and I really don't miss it. You can see some suggestions here for how to ditch cable and still watch the shows you love.

With these simple tips, you can really save some money on your monthly bills. Want some other easy money saving tips? Check out these creative ways to save on groceries.
