Is your hairbrush covered in hair? It's so easy to clean the hair and hair products from your brush. Check out these easy tips on how to clean and wash your hairbrush.

Do your hairbrushes get dirty and gross? Mine tends to get coated with hair and sticky from the products that I use in my hair.

Because I have such fine hair I tend to use a lot of products like hairspray and volume powder that make my brush sticky. Plus, I get little balls of grey fuzz in my hairbrush too!

However, it's easy to clean out a hairbrush and get all the sticky gunk off. Check out how to clean your hairbrush below.

How To Clean Your Hairbrush

To clean and wash your hairbrush you will need a few things. You probably already have everything you need at home.

items needed to clean brush
  • scissors
  • shampoo ( I recommend baby shampoo or clarifying shampoo)
  • old toothbrush

It will only take a few minutes but keep in mind you need time for your hairbrush to dry after washing it, so don't do it right before you need to use it.

Remove Hair From The Hairbrush

It is best to cut out the hair from your brush. I used to pull it out with a comb, but then I noticed I was losing the caps off of the bristles that way. It's easy to cut and gently remove the hair.

I highly recommend you cut out the hair instead of pulling it out. This is important if you have a round brush so you don't tear it up.

Washing The Hairbrush

To wash your hairbrush you will want to fill up a sink or bowl and then and a squirt of two of clarifying or baby shampoo.

Baby shampoo will remove products and body oil in your hairbrush without being overly harsh on the hairbrush.

But, if you have a lot of product in your hairbrush clarifying might be best. It is perfect for washing hairbrushes.

Swish the brush around in the sink to really mix up the shampoo and then let it soak in the water for about 10 minutes.

This helps get rid of all the sticky hair products and any leftover hair stuck in the brush.

After about 10 minutes just rinse the brush out under warm water.

If the brush still has hair product on it you can use an old toothbrush to scrub any product off. Usually soaking and rinsing gets everything off for me.

Removing Any Fuzz From Your Hairbrush

If your hairbrush still has some grey fuzzy stuff stuck to it you can easily remove it.

Let your hairbrush sit out for a couple of hours to completely dry before you remove the fuzzy stuff.

Once it is dry use your scissors to cut away the grey fuzz. It will be easier to do if you have small scissors that can cut away at it. I use ones like these from Amazon.

It feels so much better to use a clean brush than a dirty, sticky brush. The best part is it only takes a few minutes to clean it. This hair brush cleaning hack really gets your brushes clean again!

Why is my hairbrush sticky?

Hairbrushes can get sticky from body oils and hair products that get left behind when you brush. By regularly cleaning and washing a hairbrush you can easily remove the products and oils leaving a clean hairbrush.

Why is there grey fuzz on my hairbrush?

The grey fuzz in your hairbrush is a combination of hair products, body oils, and dead skin. This all rolls together in little balls that can get stuck in your hairbrush.

I'm going to pin this so I can find it later. I have long fine hair, so my brush gets dirty pretty quickly. I haven't bothered to worry too much about them because the last several years I've just been buying the cheap brushes and slowly the bristle break or the little beads on the end of the bristle comes off. But I'm planning to buy a good quality brush from Fuller Brush soon and the last one I had lasted at least 10 years, maybe longer. Obviously when you have a good brush like that you need to eventually do something to clean it and I was never sure how.

    Thanks!

Thanks for pinning! I haven't tried the Fuller brushes before, but it looks like they make a static free one. I get horrible static hair in the winter. I might have to try one of these.

Thanks for the tip! I usually pulled the hair out of mine as well, so going to try cutting it from now on. Stopping by from Tip Me Tuesday.
