5 ways to save on produce

Buying fruits and vegetables can sometimes be expensive. They can put a big dent in your grocery bill if you let them.  But, with a little bit of work there are a few ways you can save on produce. Check out these 5 ways to save on produce.

    Buy in Season

It's an old one I know, but purchase the produce that is in season. I have seen strawberries for $3 or for as low as $1. If you buy the fruits and vegetables when they are in season it will save you big money. During fall and winter apples, oranges, and bananas are a great price. You can even store apples for a month or two.

    Buy Clearance Fruit

Another easy way to save is to look for clearance produce. Both Kroger and Meijer have sections where they keep produce they have marked down. This is a fantastic way to grab cheap fruits and vegetables. I can often get a couple pounds of apples for $.99. Just look for these areas in your store.

    Buy Organic

I know it sounds odd, but buying organic can help you save. There are some new organic companies out there that are offering coupons. I can save money by buy the organic products. Earthbound Farm has coupons nearly every week. With a sale and coupons I can pick up organic carrots cheaper than regular carrots.

Don't Buy More Than You Can Use

You can also save by not over buying on produce. The ten pounds of peaches from the warehouse may sound like a great deal, but if you throw out half of them, its not. Make sure you don't buy more than what your family will eat before it goes bad. If the produce is going bad try to find a way to use it. I have frozen lots of fruits before. We also like to dehydrate fruits and veggies if they are going bad.

    Shop at Discount Stores

One of the best ways I have found to save money is shop at Aldi or other discount stores. Their produce prices are great. Plus they have a double your money back guarantee. I have been very happy with the produce that I get there and because their stores aren't huge I can get in and out very quickly.

With a little bit of work you and your family can enjoy the produce you love without spending a fortune. Want to save even more money on your grocery bill? Check out these tips for saving on meat. What are your ways for saving on produce? I would love to hear them.

I can't wait until I can start getting things out of my garden & from our local farmers market. Freezing, canning, and drying are going to be big parts of our summer/fall here this year.

The way I save on produce is only buying what I need for my menu plan! It's easy for veggies to go bad if you don't know exactly when you'll need to use them! I usually shop every other Sunday afternoon, so I tend to use broccoli at the end of my two weeks since it's hardier and lasts longer in the fridge. I make sure I plan meals that have salads and tacos, which require lots of fresh veggies and lettuce, at the beginning of the two weeks.

That's such a great idea. I always over estimate how much veggies we will eat.
