Inside: Looking for a simple applesauce recipe? Try this delicious red hot applesauce. It's so easy to make and you can freeze it too.
    red hot applesauce

One of my favorite things about fall is apples. I love apple pie, apple butter and apple chips. But, red hot applesauce is by far my favorite apple thing to make. I love having the smell of cooked apples through the house. Most of all I love how simple it is cook, but makes me feel like I am doing so much.

Red hot applesauce can easily be made in the crockpot and takes about 15 minutes to throw together. Then just let it cook away. If you don't have canning supplies you can either eat it in a couple of weeks, or freeze it to save for later. My favorite recipe for applesauce is one that has a cinnamon flavor that comes from using red hots. It's has a great cinnamon flavor with just a bit of a kick.

Start by peeling and coring about 10 apples. I like to use a combo slicer/corer to cut and core the apples.

Then it's easy just to cut off the skin of the apple.

Place the slices in the crockpot and add a 1/2 cup of water and a 1/2 of brown sugar. Place slow cooker on high heat for about 3 to 4 hours. Stir every 30 minutes or so.

As it cooks the apples will slowly start to break down.

After about 3 to 4 hours it will start to look like a very chunky applesauce. Stir in the red hots and turn to low heat. Allow to sit for about 15 minutes.

You can either leave your applesauce really chunky or use a food processor to get it to the desired consistency. We like our really smooth, so I placed it in a food processor.

I store my red hot applesauce for the fridge in my small canning jars and then I use the larger quart containers for freezing.

I love that I can easily make my family homemade applesauce that we can serve all year long. It is so much better than store bought and we are saving money.

    Red Hot Applesauce

    • 10 Medium Apples, peeled and cored
    • 1/2 cup Water
    • 1/2 cup Brown Sugar
    • 1/4 cup Red Hots

Peel and core 10 medium sized apples. Cut apples into small slices.Place apples in a slow cooker. Add a 1/2 cup of water and a 1/2 of brown sugar to the slow cooker. Set the slow cooker on high and let the apples cook for 3 to 4 hours stirring every 30 minutes or so. After 3 to 4 hours the apples will be soft enough that they can be mashed with a fork or potato masher. Add 1/4 of a cup red hots and stir well. Place the slow cooker to low and let sit for 15 minutes. Move the applesauce from the slow cooker over to a food processor or blender. Puree the applesauce to the consistency that your family likes.  Red hot applesauce can be stored in the fridge for a couple of weeks or in the freezer for up to a year. Enjoy!
