Inside: Kids will love making this homemade magic shell ice cream treat. The best part is it only takes a few minutes and 2 ingredients. Have some summer fun today with this simple recipe.
Growing up I thought my grandma had the best food. She always bought all kinds of snack foods that we didn't usually get at home. Even if we did get them, my mom wouldn't let us eat an unlimited amount the way my Grandma would.
My grandma had full-size Snickers bars, cookies, soda, and magic shell ice cream topping. I remember my sister and I were always amazed at how the magic shell topping would just pour out like chocolate syrup, yet quickly harden. It was not only fun to make but yummy to eat too.
Now that I am the mom I don't buy a lot of snacks and of course, my mom buys all the snacks my kiddo wants when he goes to grandma's house. We don't eat a lot of desserts, but when I saw a recipe for homemade magic shell in a magazine a couple of years ago I knew I had to try it.
To make the homemade magic shell I changed a couple of things to make the recipe a little more frugal and we love it. It delivers just as much fun and deliciousness that I remember magic shell having as a kid.
This homemade magic shell is a perfect recipe to make with your kids on a summer day. They will not only love helping to make it but the "magic" that happens when you pour this chocolate sauce over ice cream.
The best part is you only need two ingredients, and of course plenty of ice cream.
You will need to start with 6 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate chips. Put them in a microwave-safe bowl and cook stirring every 30 seconds until melted.
Once the chocolate chips are melted add 2 tablespoons vegetable oil and stir well to mix.
Spoon over ice cream and watch it harden in under 30 seconds. Enjoy some fresh homemade magic shell ice cream toppings.
One of my favorite things about this homemade magic shell is just how easy it is change. If you don't like using vegetable oil in your cooking you can also substitute in coconut oil. It works just as well.
You can also change what you use for the chocolate. We love semi-sweet chocolate to make the magic shell but feel free to use dark chocolate or white chocolate.
Finally, you can add in some toppings to your homemade magic shell recipe. Toffee pieces are amazing in this recipe! But you can also mix it up with sprinkles, peanuts, or whatever your family loves. This is an amazing treat that you can completely customize for your family.
Store your homemade magic shell in a glass jar at room temperature for up to one week.
