Use our homemade magic shell recipe on all of your ice cream treats that takes just a couple of minutes to make, without a double boiler, and only uses 2 ingredients!

When I was a little girl, I thought my grandma had the best food. She always bought all kinds of snack foods that we didn't usually get at home. Even if we did get them, my mom wouldn't let us eat an unlimited amount the way my Grandma would.

My grandma had full-size Snickers bars, cookies, soda, and magic shell ice cream topping. I remember my sister and I were always amazed at how the magic shell topping would just pour out like chocolate syrup, yet quickly harden on cold ice cream. It was not only fun to make but yummy to eat too.

Now that I am the mom I don't buy a lot of snacks and of course, my mom buys all the snacks my kiddo wants when he goes to grandma's house. We don't eat a lot of desserts, but when I saw a recipe for homemade magic shell in a magazine a couple of years ago I knew I had to try it.

You will never buy store-bought magic shell, once you see how easy it is!

Chocolate chips and vegetable oil on the counter.

Ingredients Needed

  • Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips
  • Vegetable Oil

How to Make Homemade Chocolate Magic Shell

STEP 1: Add the chocolate chips to a small bowl.

STEP 2: Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring each cycle, until smooth and melted.

STEP 3: Add the oil to the melted chocolate and stir.

STEP 4: Spoon over your favorite ice cream and watch the magic liquid chocolate turn to a hard shell!

Tips for Making

  • You want to microwave the chocolate in short bursts so that it doesn't seize up. Some chocolate brands are worse about this than others.

Substitutions and Variations

Coconut Oil: If you could like to use coconut oil, you need to measure the amount as a solid. Then combine the melted coconut oil with the chocolate just as we did with the vegetable oil.

Chocolate: We love semi-sweet chocolate to make the magic shell but feel free to use milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or white chocolate.

Toppings: make ice cream sundaes by adding your favorite toppings such as toffee, sprinkles, or nuts before the chocolate sauce hardens. Then top with other nut butters or caramel sauce.

Ice cream bars - you could also make your own chocolate dip ice cream bars if you have one of those molds. Once the shell hardens store them in the freezer.

How to Store

Store your liquid magic shell in a mason jar at room temperature for up to one week. If you don't have a jar, use an airtight container.

How Does Magic Shell Work?

The oil (magic ingredient) dilutes the chocolate and in the process lowers it's melting point. While this makes it easy to drizzle over a bowl of ice cream, the coldness  from the ice cream help to solidify, turning it into a hard chocolate shell.
