Inside: Skip all the chemicals and try this DIY toilet cleaner. It's easy to use and your toilet look great. This homemade toilet cleaner will clean and disinfect.
Recently I have been making a move to more natural cleaners for my family and my home. I love to make my own cleaners because it is usually cheaper than buying the store-bought cleaners and homemade cleaners don't contain all the chemicals that are in the regular cleaners.
I made the move to a DIY toilet cleaner when I ran out of store-bought toilet cleaner. I used to buy toilet cleaners when they were on sale and stock up on them. Unfortunately, my stockpile ran out recently with no deals in site.
I was surprised at how much toilet cleaners were when they aren't on sale. There was no way I was going to pay $2.50 a bottle for a toilet cleaner. All that cleaner just goes down the drain!
As much as I would prefer to skip cleaning my toilets, I knew they needed to be cleaned. 😉
So, I tried some DIY toilet cleaners that I had found on pinterest. I was looking for something easy and inexpensive, and of course I wanted it to work well.
I found plenty of different recipes, but none of them blew me away. Often, they involved two different bottles that you would mix together in the toilet bowl.
Cleaning a toilet bowl is bad enough without trying to make up multiple bottles or containers of things to mix.
I finally came up with my own recipe for homemade toilet cleaner that is easy, frugal and works great. It is so simple!
Do you ever spend so much time looking for the perfect solution for something only to realize the solution is so easy?
I totally did this with this DIY Toilet Cleaner. I convinced myself that I needed a big mix of cleaners to get the toilet clean. In the end, the mix that worked the best was also the simplest.

Make Your Own Toilet Bowl Cleaner
With a DIY toilet cleaner most people are looking for 3 things. It needs to be easy to use, clean your toilets, and disinfect the toilet.
Vinegar is one of those products that can pretty much clean anything. It tends to be one of the first cleaners I reach for when I am cleaning around the house.
I started by just using vinegar in the toilet bowl. I was amazed at how clean vinegar made the toilet bowl.
We tend to get hard water stains in our toilet bowls and the vinegar made the stains disappear. When cleaning the toilet you will want to make sure that you use just a plain cleaning vinegar.
If you use anything like the darker apple cider vinegar you could risk discoloring the toilet bowl.
Vinegar will work great to clean and disinfect the toilet bowl. The acid in the vinegar will help break up any hard water deposits that are in your toilet bowl.
Since hard water can perminantly etch surfaces you want to make sure you keep the hard water stains away.
Vinegar also does a great job at killing off any germs that may be hanging out in your toilet. The toilet can contain 3.2 million bacteria per square inch!! That is absolutly disgusting.
The vinegar in the DIY toilet cleaner will help kill the germs and bacteria floating around in your toilet.
I also decided to add a little bit of essential oils to make the bowl smell better and add some extra antibacterial and anti-fungal properties to the cleaner. Let's face it, most toilets could use it.
Lavender essential oil smells great, but also can kill off germs and bacteria. It has even been known to kill off E. Coli. By adding it to the homemade toilet cleaner it will help kill off even more germs and bacteria in the toilet bowl.
That is all you need to make this DIY toilet cleaner! Just two ingredients for a fresh and clean toilet.
To make the homemade toilet cleaner easier to add into the bowl I picked up a squeeze bottle. I can quickly mix up the DIY toilet cleaner in the squeeze bottle and it is so easy to spray it into the toilet.
You can use any kind of bottle or jar, but this squeeze bottle from Amazon is cheap to buy and makes it really easy to use.
To make the DIY toilet cleaner add about 3 cups of vinegar into the squeeze bottle. Then add 10-15 drops of lavender oil to the bottle.
To use, screw the lid on the bottle and put your finger over the hole. Give the bottle a good shake.
Then spray around the inside of the toilet bowl. I use about 1/4-1/2 a cup per toilet bowl. If your toilet bowl is very dirty you may need to use a little more.
Let the mixture sit for about 20 minutes and then use a toilet brush to scrub the bowl. You can use any toilet brush but I absolutly love this one from Amazon. I have had it for about 6-7 years and it is still in great shape.
Once you are done scrubbing the toilet then give it a good flush. The toilet will be nice and clean.
Plus, the lavender oil makes it smell great instead of the nasty chemical smell you get from most toilet cleaners.
For around $.35 I can make a bottle of toilet cleaner that works and smells great. This easy and frugal DIY toilet cleaner will help keep your toilet clean and disinfected. Skip the expensive cleaners and chemicals and try this easy homemade toilet cleaner instead.
