Spring is officially here! I love the beginning of spring. The weather starts to shift from freezing cold to warmer weather. The trees start to bud. It is finally enjoyable to be outside.
With the spring weather comes some spring maintenance. It's not fun, but you can go out now and tackle these projects before the great weather gets here. Taking care of these spring maintenance tips now will not only help you have a more relaxing spring and summer, they will also help save you money and time. You can avoid any major problems before they even start.
Spring Maintenance Tips
I like to tackle these spring maintenance tips in a weekend. If you have a nice Saturday in early spring you can quickly mark these off your spring checklist and then spend the summer enjoying the warmer weather.
To complete these tasks you won't need a lot of tools, mainly just some time set aside to complete the maintenance.
A few tools that are helpful to have are listed below.

Inspect Your Roof
Missing or damaged shingles often go unnoticed until the spring rains come. Keep the rest of the house free of water damage by checking your roof for loose, damaged or missing shingles.
You can do a visual inspection from the ground, or have a roofing company do an inspection. Most companies will do a free inspection of your roof. I prefer to have our local roofing company do it each spring.
Clean Around Your Air Conditioning Unit
Make sure that your air conditioning unit is clear of any plants, trash, or dirt. You will want two feet of space clear around your unit.
You may want to have it inspected before you get to the really hot weather.
Clean Gutters
If you have tall trees in your yard it's easy for your gutter to fill up with leaves. Make sure you clean all the leaves from your gutters so any water can freely flow through the gutters.
When the water freezes it can damage the gutters or your house.
One of the best ways to quickly and easily clean your gutters is using a gutter scoop to get all the leaves from the gutters.
You can use a trash bag to dump all the leaves in as you scoop them out. It doesn't take a lot of time but can help prevent damage to your home.
I try to do this task every spring and fall to keep too many leaves from clogging the gutters.
Regrade Your Soil
Make sure that all of the soil around your home's foundation is draining out toward your lawn. A puddling of water around your foundation can cause leaks and foundation damage.
If you need to, add more soil up against the house to make sure it slopes out.

Replace Lighting
Make sure all of your outdoor lighting is working. Replace any bulbs that have burned out over winter.
Sweep any bugs out from around the lighting and wipe down the glass on any lighting with some homemade glass cleaner.
Look For Rotting Wood
Check around your home for rotting wood. Window and door frames can often rot over winter leading to water damage, pests, and drafts in the home.
Replace any rotting wood and caulk around the new wood. By replacing the wood with it first starts rotting you can help ensure you don't have any further damage to your home.
While you are looking for rotted wood you can also caulk any areas that may need recaulking before the spring rains.
Change Furnace Filters
Keep your furnace running better this winter with a new furnace filter. Before you turn on the heat this winter you should make sure to have a new air filter.
Changing them regularly helps with the air quality in your home and helps keep your furnace running longer.
If you are like me and tend to forget when you change your filters I highly recommend Amazon.

I like to check all of my smoke detectors in the spring and the fall. Just take a few minutes to make sure that they all work. It is also a good idea to change out the batteries.
