If you live in an area with hard water you know how annoying the hard water stains can be on your drinking glasses. I feel like putting my dishes through the dishwasher should remove the hard water stains. For some reason, it only seems to make the stains worse. I have heard that dish detergents help contribute to the white chalky appearance on glasses.
Every couple of months I get tired of the hard water stains on our glasses and clean them off. It only takes a few minutes of preparation and some soaking time, but makes a huge difference in the look of the glasses. Even the worst looking hard water stained glasses come out looking shiny and clean. It really is the easiest way to remove hard water from glasses.
Recently I cleaned a really badly stained drinking glass. It’s one that we keep in our bedroom for the dogs to drink out of. Yes, I know, it’s really weird that my dogs drink out of glasses. You can really see even in pictures how bad the hard water stains are. The picture below is before the glass is cleaned.
To clean the hard water stains you will need to fill up your sink with enough water to cover the glasses. It doesn’t really matter if you use warm or cold water. Then add about 1 cup of vinegar to the water and mix. If you have really badly stained glasses like mine you may want to add another 1/4-1/2 cup of vinegar. Then add your glasses to the water.
Let the glasses soak for at least 30 minutes in the vinegar and water mixture. I usually just put them in before I run some errands so they soak for about 1-2 hours. After you have let them soak remove one and wash it off. Even when it is wet you should be able to see if the hard water film is gone. If it is you can remove all the glasses from the sink, rinse them off, and wash them in the dishwasher or how you normally clean them. If you still notice some film put them back in to soak for a little longer.
Although I know my dogs don’t care I am happy that the glass looks so much better. I love how clean and shiny the glasses are now that they have been cleaned. By doing this every few months you can keep all your drinking glasses sparkling clean with just a few minutes of your time.
