Ready for a successful yard sale? Organize your garage sale to sell everything. Regular garage sales can help keep your home organized and decluttered.

successful yard sale

It's that time of year. It's getting warm outside and everyone is having yard sales. I love having yard sales.

Having a garage sale is a great way to eliminate clutter around the house.

Want to make sure your yard sale is profitable? Check out these 7 tips for a successful yard sale.

Advertise

Unless you live on a major road advertising is necessary. You can advertise for free on Craigslist or list it in your paper.

Have some well-marked signs pointing to your yard sale. Some Dollar Trees sell helium balloons for $.50 each. I like to buy two and tie them to the mailbox to attract more attention.

Plan Ahead & Declutter

Don't run around your house on the day of the yard sale. Take a week or two to collect everything you want to sell.

Go through the closets and drawers to find things that you don't use or don't fit. Try to make sure clothes are washed and stain-free. Check out my decluttering checklist if you need some inspiration!

Take a few minutes to wipe down dirty toys or dusty items.

You will get more money if the clothes and other items look clean and in good shape.

Plug In Electronics

You might have a great T.V. or DVD player, but unless it is plugged in the buyers can't see that. It only takes a few minutes to run an extension cord to the T.V. or DVD player.

If you play a kids movie the kids will stay occupied while mom or dad shops. People are more likely to buy something if they know it works.

Have Change On Hand

The night before your yard sale make sure you have plenty of change. I would recommend heading to your local bank to get some change.

I like to have a few rolls of quarters on hand to make change for things under a dollar. Plus, make sure you have at least $20-$30 in one-dollar bills.

You don't want someone to skip buying at your yard sale because you can't make the change.

A couple of rolls of quarters can make your day go smoother.

price everything at your yard sale

Price Everything For A Successful Yard Sale

I know it can take a bit of time, but make sure you price everything. It's so much easier than telling people the price on items and I feel like I sell way more stuff when I take the time to price it.

You can save yourself some time by pricing items while you are decluttering. That way you only have to grab everything and put it out for the yardsale.

Easy tip: If you're in a hurry you can buy some stickers that have amounts already on them.

Batteries Are Included

People want to see that toys and gadgets work. I recommend checking everything you're selling to make sure the batteries are working.

The Dollar stores are a great place to buy inexpensive batteries to include in toys.

For a couple of dollars, you can make sure you get top dollar for your items.

Also, again I recommend while you are replacing the batteries wipe the toys down with a wet microfiber cloth. Toys that look clean and well taken care of are more likely to be bought.

Bag It Up

Grab all those plastic bags you have from the stores and have them for people to use.

Buyers can't look through things with their arms full. Having bags for people to use will help encourage them to buy more.

Giving them bags is one of those easy tips for a successful yard sale.

With a little work and time, you can have a successful yard sale.

Great tips! We did a bunch of garage sale shopping last week and it was obvious who was prepared and not. I would also add--make sure everything is super organized and marked so people can see quickly if you have what they are looking for (I was shopping for kids' clothes and looking for particular sizes)

Thanks for sharing these tips. We are hoping to have a yard sale next month so I was excited about running across your article. I love the idea of using balloons, and I had never thought about plugging in electronics.

We love both throwing and going to a good garage sale. Great ideaa!!!But we never end up pricing everything just because it take so much time and the payout for us has never been great. We just label a few tables and tell people prices!!!

Our neighborhood garage sale is at the beginning of June. I can't wait! I am going to set things up at my house and leave my husband in charge so I can go to all the other sales! Hopefully he doesn't start giving stuff away =)

My husband always starts giving stuff away. I think he knows if he doesn't get rid of it he has to haul it to goodwill. 🙂
