Inside: Tired of throwing out hard, clumpy brown sugar? Try the best trick for keeping brown sugar soft and tips for softening hard brown sugar.

keeping brown sugar soft

If you love to bake and are tired of clumpy, hard brown sugar this is a fantastic tip for you. In humid areas brown sugar can often get so hard it is impossible to use. Instead of throwing out the brown sugar try the best trick for keeping brown sugar soft.

How To Keep Brown Sugar Soft

Keeping brown sugar soft can be challenging if you just don't use it often. To make sure your brown sugar stays soft follow these tips below.

Items Needed:

  • Airtight Container
  • Damp Terra Cotta Disc (mine is from Amazon) or Marshmallows

To help keep the brown sugar soft you will want to store it in an airtight container. By keeping air from getting in you will help keep it soft.

I love these containers that you can get from the container store or Amazon. They work perfectly for brown sugar because they will hold a terra cotta disc.

You could also use any other airtight container.

Next, you will want to take a terra cotta disc and soak it in water for about 20 minutes.

Remove the disk from the water and wipe it with a clean towel.

Add it to the airtight container along with your brown sugar and seal it up. It should keep your brown sugar soft for up to 3 months.

Keeping Brown Sugar Soft With Marshmallows

You can also keep brown sugar soft by adding two regular-size marshmallows to the brown sugar container.

Whenever I need to get some brown sugar I can just take them out and then put them back in when I am done.

I would recommend swapping out the marshmallows every 2-3 months. I don't feel like the marshmallows work as well, but it will do the trick if you don't want to buy a disc.

Softening Hardened Brown Sugar

If you already have some hardened brown sugar and need to soften it for a recipe you can do so in the microwave.

Just place the desired amount of brown sugar in a bowl and place in the microwave. Cover with a damp, but not dripping paper towel and microwave for about 30 seconds.

After 30 seconds check on it and continue to microwave in 30-second increments until it has softened. You can use a fork to help separate the large clumps.

With just a few seconds you will never have to deal with clumpy, hard brown sugar again.

My mom used to put a slice of apple in the box of brown sugar. We lived in a very dry climate (Colorado) and the brown sugar would get rock hard. It worked great!

Another one: does listening to such great music as traditional Puerto Rican Navidades music, or Martin Hayes accompanied by Dennis Cahill or Joni Mitchell, Tom Rush, Bob Dylan, Ella Fitzgerald, Katy Perry, Alicia Keyes, Eric Satie, Weather Report, Yes, Telemann, Mozart, Eric Clapton, Patsy Cline, Waylon Jennings, Woody Guthrie, etc. Relax One and Aid the appetite, digestion, inner spirit, lightness?

We prefer most things with brown sugar or honey but with hot fudge if I am really hungry or worn out.

Here is a strange question but the {experts} don't even understand why I ask it (personal reasons):

Is the acid in strong Italian dressings (with green olives, herbs such as thyme, rosemary, cumin, onions, peppers, tomatoes (of course)), is this something which helps heal or prevent inflammation? Perhaps someone out there knows.
