DIY Coconut Oil Spray

Have you noticed that coconut oil is all the rage now? I finally tried it about 6 months ago and love it. It gives such unique flavor to the dishes that you use it in. We loved it so much I decided to switch to a coconut oil cooking spray. Then, I saw the price of the spray, I couldn't believe how much it was. I decided I would make my own.

There are two ways to make your own spray. The first way is to buy a oil mister. They are around $10 and to tell you the truth, I had one once and wasn't blown away. It would leak and get messy really quick. The other way to make your own spray is to use a spray bottle. I found a food grade spray bottle in the BBQ section at Meijer for around $3.

The great thing about making your own coconut oil spray is that it only takes two ingredients, coconut oil and water. I recommend using distilled water instead of tap water.

Start by measuring out 1/4 cup coconut oil in a microwave container. Microwave for about 15-20 seconds or until melted. Once the coconut oil has melted then pour it into your spray bottle.

Then add 3/4 cup distilled water to the spray bottle. The distilled water helps the oil spray in a nice mist. As you can see below the oil and water doesn't mix.

That's okay, just give it a little shake before you use it. You can see the oil and water together more.

Depending on how warm or cold you keep your house you may need to warm your coconut oil a bit after it has sat for while. Coconut oil has a melting point of 75 degrees, so if your house is colder than that the coconut oil with harden after a while. Just run it under some warm water to get the coconut oil to melt. Then shake the bottle again.

When you are ready to use it just spray it on your pan or dish. You may need to adjust the tip of spray bottle to get a good mist not a spray.

If you aren't a big coconut oil fan you can also use vegetable oil or olive oil, too. I love being able to make my own and save my family some money.

I am going to try this but was wondering how long this may last without the water getting rancid? Just wondering if it will last a month? Anyone have a problem with it spoiling?

I have used it for about 3-4 weeks without it going bad. I usually run out before the end of 4 weeks.

    Great Idea,
We love coconut oil and use it for other things too, not just for cooking .
Thanks for this idea, I love saving money on things like that, cause I would
rather spend it on something pretty or eating out..........lol

    Blessings, Nellie

Hmm. I didn't know they sold food grade spray bottles at Meijer! I'll have to check it out next time. I haven't made the switch to coconut oil, but I could - and should - do this with my canola oil.

They aren't with the regular spray bottles. Check the kitchen section or the grill section. Hope that helps.

What a wonderful, frugal idea. I can't wait to give it a try. I've never been thrilled with purchased spray, it's much too sticky. Thanks for sharing at the This Is How We Roll Link Party on Organized 31.
